Sandy & Ruth Finlay
Sandy and Ruth live in Inverness and worship at the Free North Church.
They have many interests and, along with their family, love the Scottish islands. Their last visit to Iona from Oban included a “never to be forgotten’ drive through Mull on a service bus when the driver gave everyone non-stop amazing descriptions of the island’s geography, geology, climate, wildlife, culture, hamlets and inhabitants”.
Come and join us for a late spring break to the picturesque town of Oban. Oban is one of the most popular holiday towns on the west coast and is commonly known as the “gateway to the isles”, due to the ferry connections to and from the Inner and Outer Hebrides.
Oban is the ideal place to explore and the first thing you might do is visit the iconic McCaig’s Tower to be rewarded with panoramic views of the town and coastline. There is a beautiful coastal stroll to the beach at Ganavan Bay and on the way you can stop at the ruined Dunollie Castle to visit its interesting museum and grounds.
The nearby village of Dunbeg has the fascinating Ocean Explorer Centre and there is the dramatic Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel, which is one of the oldest strongholds in Scotland. To the south of Oban is the Island of Seil which is connected to the mainland by the “Bridge over the Atlantic” and a five-minute ferry ride from there takes you to Easdale Island, originally the centre of the slate quarry industry, and now made famous by the annual World Stone Skimming Championships. Or you might want to take the ferry to Lismore where you can visit the Gaelic heritage centre and café
A full day tour to the Island of Iona has been arranged and this is included in the price of your holiday. This tour promises to be an enjoyable day trip taking the ferry to Mull where we will be met by a bus for a scenic drive to Iona. Iona is best known for its historic Abbey, which was founded by St Columba in 563 AD, and where many Scottish kings are buried.
The 3-star Royal Hotel is our base for this holiday. It is a comfortable hotel in a Victorian building and offers traditional Scottish hospitality. The building has lift access, but there are limited bedrooms with walk-in showers. It is a five-minute walk to both the ferry terminal and the railway station and is perfectly located for shops and restaurants.
