The West Coast of Scotland in Spring sunshine, what's not to like? Indeed, we were blessed with 3 days of wall-to-wall sunshine, so the lush, fresh greenery, bluebell woods and brilliant, sparkling sea were a delight to the eyes.
We arrived on Monday, 27 April by various means and enjoyed getting to know one another over a good meal in our comfortable hotel in the centre of Oban.
On Tuesday most of us visited the ruined Dunollie Castle and grounds on the outskirts of Oban. Some took the guided tour where we learned so much about the history of the area.
On Wednesday we visited the island of Iona. This entailed an hour's ferry ride to Mull then a one-and-a-half hour bus ride across Mull to the take the short ferry trip across to Iona. Travel through Mull was on single track roads with passing places, and the scenery was very dramatic as we went through a great glen. Iona Abbey was interesting as was the ruined Nunnery, but we were especially taken by the commentary given on the bus about a revival on Mull amongst the Baptists when believers were baptised in the icy waters!
Thursday saw some hardy souls taking an open boat trip round the bay and others going on a guided walking tour of Oban with a Peruvian guide.
Staying in such a central location was ideal as we were free to explore on our own very comfortably.
A special mention must be made of our leaders, Sandy and Ruth. They quietly and unobtrusively looked after us throughout the holiday and made sure that we were well cared for at all times. On the 4 evenings Sandy led a Bible study based on the Great Commission at the end of Matthew's gospel. This gave us food for thought at the time and a challenge to go home with.
On Friday, 1 May, the enjoyable time together having flown by, we headed for home with thankful hearts.
