George & Elizabeth Barnie

Background

George and Elizabeth Barnie live in Inverness.  They are both retired teachers and enjoy travelling and meeting different people.

They became Christians in their college days and have different roles in their church.

George does some lay preaching and preaches in a number of rural churches in the Highlands.

Come and discover the Tweed Valley, which takes its name from the mighty Scottish river that flows through the heart of the beautiful Borders region. This area is well-known for its outstanding natural beauty, picturesque towns, historic attractions and is a popular destination for outdoor and cultural pursuits.

We are to stay in the ancient and charming Royal Burgh town of Peebles. The town is known for its historic architecture, its riverside location and scenic surroundings. It has won many awards for its wide variety of independent shops, including gifts, clothing, art galleries, cafés and restaurants. The town is a connecting hub for several long-distance walking routes through the region and there is also a ‘Peebles Town Walk', which guides you through notable parts of this special market town. So, bring along your walking boots!

There are impressive visitor attractions nearby which are easily accessible by car or bus. These include: Traquair House, Scotland’s oldest inhabited house; Abbotsford House, home of Sir Walter Scott; Floors Castle, a magnificent stately home with its walled garden and café; Kailzie Gardens with courtyard café; and Dawyck Botanic Gardens, renowned for its diverse plant collections and autumn colour with a visitor centre, gift shop and café.

Peebles Hydro Hotel is the venue for this autumnal break. The Hydro is a warm and friendly hotel and it takes pride in its locally sourced food, some of it grown in their own gardens.  A 15-minute walk along the riverside takes you into town.  For those of you who prefer to spend their time at the Hydro, there are plenty of activities available – trekking with alpacas, tennis courts, board games, and table tennis among others. Alternatively, you can take a dip in the indoor pool, spend time in the gym or have a spa treatment.  Surely something for everyone!
